Fish: Greenback Cutthroat

A New Obsession: Cutthroats

Yesterday’s adventures took me to seven lakes, and 4 miles of hiking in search for cutthroats. The weather was tough, snowing and windy. I had not caught a single fish all day until my last stop. Only caught one fish, on my first cast, but it was a beauty! A nice Greenback cutthroat! That fish alone made my entire day!

that's an awesome catch my friend. We'll have to go sometime, I know I could use the exercise. Depending on the weather it might have to be next year! lol

The further away from the crowds you get, the better the fish and fishing. Well done.

Thought of you up there with all the bad weather after meeting at Chatty on Sunday in 80 degree temps. Good to see you had some success... very nice Greenback!

This was a smaller greenback I got out of Murray on 10/17. BIG difference! Same thrill!

Was this Zimmerman?

Crazypickles, Zimmerman apparently has no fish in it any more. I was going to hike up to it a few months back, and right by the parking lot, there was a sign that said no fish in the lake, and it will be restocked next year. I remember seeing a whole bunch of DOW guys up here when I went to steamboat this summer, so maybe they killed it off and put in some of the bear creek strain of fish to have some pure greenbacks in there.

Hey Lindsie, if you ever want some local's info on some high country cutthroat waters in my area, just shoot me an email. I know a number of hike-ins in Summit County that hold good numbers of nice cutts.

A fine example of a Summit cutt:
