Fish: Gizzard Shad

Gizzard Shad

Post By: Stockbronco      Posted: 7/1/2013 11:59:45 AM     Points: 162
I've heard that gizzard shad are primarily plankton feeders but I would like to catch one on my fly rod to add to my species list. Has anyone caught a gizzard shad on any sort of artificial fly or lure and if so, what fly or lure did you catch it on?

I know that nightangler has caught one on a lure. You may want to ask him.

I actually caught that gizzard shad on a hook with no weights and 2 leeches on it. I was letting the leeches do the work with no weight. It hit really hard but then might as well have been a dead fish I reeled in. I didnt even realize it was a Gizzard Shad at the time because it was a good 12" long and I didnt realize they got that big...

P.S. It was caught in P-lo
