Lake: Carter Lake

Incident at Carter Lake this morning

Hi all!
You've probably heard it on the news by now, but this morning there was an explosion outside of one of the two water filter treatment plants downstream of Carter Lake Dam #1. The two water districts that operate the plant are handling all calls regarding the incident. As for Carter Lake Dam #1 and Carter Lake Reservoir, both are unaffected and operating as normal.

Additionally, Larimer County Parks and Open Lands, who manages recreation for us at Carter Lake, has this note out about recreation today:

"Access is restricted to the south end of Carter Lake due to the incident at the Carter Lake Filter Plant. That means no access to South Shore and Carter Knolls campgrounds, the South Shore boat ramp, or the swimbeach.

There are no restrictions on access to the north end of Carter Lake: Eagle, Big Thompson, Lowells, and North Pines campgrounds can be reached, as well as the North and North Pines boat ramps, the Carter Lake Marina, and the Carter Lake Sail Club. Boating is allowed on all areas of Carter Lake, although ramp access is limited to the north end of the lake."

We will keep you posted as the day goes on. Please let me know if you have additional questions or concerns. Or, if you have specific recreation questions, you can reach County Parks and Open Lands at 679-4570.

Best,
Kara

As you've probably already heard, all access to Carter Lake re-opened Saturday morning. Hopefully, no one missed any good fishing. Boating was allowed on the reservoir the entire time; it was only some shoreline recreation that was closed.

Best,
Kara
