Camping at Gross

Post By: Headley      Posted: 7/17/2007 12:33:30 PM     Points: 1
I was interested in some overnight camping, but unclear as to what's legal. I noticed people at the west end on the north side, but uncertain about access. Didn't get clear answers from the forest service Any comments?

Camping at Gross is primitive. There are no facilities whatsoever. Several areas have established campsites with firerings and cleared areas. Either bring your wood with you or gather it as you come in because those areas have been fairly well cleared. Fire safety is very important at this time of year. Access is either through Coal Creek Canyon, or Boulder Canyon. From Boulder Canyon, go about 5 miles in to Marjorie Rd and take it in about 10 miles. Turn on SR 68 and follow it in. You'll come to a parking area on your right after about 3 miles (the road dead-ends a bit further on). Go into the parking area, but follow the dirt track into the forest. Stay on the road for FR368 to the lake.

We went up there to camp about a month ago. You should definitely have a large 4x4 to get down the dirt road. My Matrix 4WD would not make it so we turned around and ended up at Guanella Pass.
