Daughter's first fish & big dead grass carp

My 4 yr old decided she is ready to start fishing, so I took her to Dixon Sat night. We fished for about an hour and she caught her first and second fish, all by herself. She had a blast.

I love the species variety at Dixon. Out of the handful of sunfish we caught, there were 3 types... pumpkinseed, bluegill, and what appeared to be a green. I took my son there recently and he caught a small grass carp.

Speaking of grass carp, we saw a big dead one on the shore. Some one else reported that maybe it had been caught.

It stank but I measured it anyway... nearly 40" and it maxed out my scale... over 30 lbs. It had weird orange spots on its head... not sure if that's a disease.

The habitat seems to be good for grass carp, as there's a ton of weeds and I've seen the fins and tails of big ones every time I've been there in the last year. Maybe a new state record in the making?

Nice fish! I got my first when I was 4, so look out, you might have a crazed angler in the making, lol.

The orange spots look like a plasmodial slime mold. Nasty.

I know there are multiple state record grass carp around waiting to be caught. A good bait is strawberry jelly mixed with flour into a powerbait-like paste. Just tie on a hook, mold on a grape sized chunk, and cast out. No weight required, the bait itself is heavy enough.

I saw a 6" black crappie with a 2' gash out of its side. It was in about 10' deep water and was obviously not coherent. What is in this lake that would take that big of a bite? Also, there were dead fish all over the banks, mostly bluegill, but also a 20" catfish too. too much irresponsible garbage also.

I won't be going back there for a while. Garbage is getting bad but the water is getting really nasty. There were a lot of dead fish in the water. Maybe catch and release on the spawning bluegill did some of them in. There seemed to be significantly more carp than last year also.
