Blue Mesa Res Lake Trout Tournament Starts The Blue Mesa Reservoir Lake Trout Tournament is scheduled to run Jan. 1 through April 30, 2024.
Tournament is sponsored by CPW in an effort to reduce the population of lake trout 24 inches in length and smaller. This is the first time CPW has held this tournament since 2021.
Anglers participating in the tournament must possess a valid Colorado fishing license and follow all Colorado boating and fishing regulations.
Anglers who harvest a lake trout 24 inches or smaller can turn in the whole fish or the fish head and place them in a plastic bag provided at one of three boat ramps at the reservoir. Bags can be found at the Iola, Elk Creek and Lake Fork boat ramps. Heads may also be turned into CPW's offices in Gunnison (300 West New York Avenue, Gunnison, Colorado 81230, 970-641-7060) or Montrose (2300 South Townsend Ave, Montrose, Colorado 81401, 970-252-6000).
Cash prizes will be awarded in two categories at the conclusion of the tournament. Anglers who place in the top four of most fish turned in will earn a large portion of the total purse. First place will receive $3,000, second will earn $1,500, third place will take home $1,000 and fourth will claim $500.
In addition to those prizes, every angler will be entered in a raffle for each fish they turn in. A total of 20 winners will be randomly selected, and each will earn $200. All winners will be contacted by May 31, 2024. More info...

Grand County Fisheries Meeting w/CPW - 6:30 pm When: Friday, March 15 at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Granby Fire Station, 60500 US Highway 40, Granby, CO 80446
CPW invites anglers to attend an in-person fishery management public meeting on Friday, March 15 in Granby, Colo. Attendees will have an opportunity to hear updates on Grand County's fisheries and learn about proposed fishing regulation changes to simplify and better reflect the current state of the fishery on Lake Granby.
"It has been a few years since we have hosted a public meeting about Grand County fisheries," said Aquatic Biologist Jon Ewert. "A lot has happened since then and we want to make sure our public is informed. We are considering possible changes to fishing regulations on Lake Granby. Public feedback is critical in formulating new regulations. Similar to last year in Frisco, this will be an opportunity for CPW to gather that feedback from our angling community in person."
The meeting will begin with a presentation by CPW Aquatic Biologist Jon Ewert followed by an opportunity for attendees to ask questions on the presentation, proposed regulation changes, or other fishery related topics specific to Grand County. More info...

Blue Mesa Res Lake Trout Tournament Ends The Blue Mesa Reservoir Lake Trout Tournament is scheduled to run Jan.

Fryingpan River Discussion with CPW - 6:0 pm When: Wed., May 8 from 6 - 8 p.m.
Where: Carbondale Library (Community Room), 320 Sopris Ave, Carbondale, CO 81623
Colorado Parks and Wildlife invites anglers to attend an in-person fishery management public meeting on Wed., May 8 in Carbondale, Colo. Attendees will have an opportunity to learn more about proposed fishing regulation changes in the Fryingpan River.
CPW is proposing to institute new harvest regulations on the Fryingpan River that would increase the harvest of Brown Trout.
"Ongoing fishery surveys have documented an excessive abundance of Brown Trout in the Fryingpan River," said Kendall Bakich, Glenwood Springs Area Aquatic Biologist. "The dense population of Brown Trout has led to stunted growth due to high competition and limited food resources. This has also led to an increased potential for disease outbreaks and suppression of other fish species to survive, including Rainbow Trout and native sculpin."
The meeting will begin with a presentation by CPW Aquatic Biologist Kendall Bakich followed by an opportunity for attendees to ask questions on the presentation, proposed regulation changes, or other fishery-related topics specific to the area. More info...

Carp Slam XVIII For over 15 years now, Denver Trout Unlimited has hosted Carp Slam, our annual carp on the fly tournament. It is an internationally recognized tournament to catch and release carp in the Denver South Platte River, which has resulted in over $150,000 going to South Platte River restoration and enhancement, and acted as the catalyst for additional investments of tens of millions of dollars.
The South Platte Pro-Am Carp Slam randomly pairs professional and amateur anglers to compete with artificial flies (no scents) to catch and land this elusive, skittish, and highly intelligent fish. Landing one of these fish, that can go to 30 inches and weigh 18 pounds, can take a skilled angler 45 minutes. For each session pro and amateur anglers will alternate fishing for 30 minutes segments or until a carp has been caught, similar to drift boat customs.
