Big Un's

We had an above average winter and now we're seeing a lot of above average fish. So far this year, I have caught more big pike and big trout than I have any other year of guiding. I also know a lot of people who seem to be catching a lot of big fish, particularly big walleye's, all across the Front Range. I'll contribute the fact that we have a lot of stained water which definitely gives that average fisherman quite an edge in catching these pigs. So to those of you who have not gone fishing or not gone targeting big fish, now is the time to do so. Whether it's pike, bass, walleye or trout, it seems I have heard of many trophy catches in these species recently. With this season being so plentiful for big fish, I have found myself guiding every day, twice a day since the beginning of the month. And for those of you who believe that being a guide would be the job of your dreams, think again. While I enjoy most of the days with my customers, it is a lot of hard work and puts a toll on my body, especially my hands. I have been poked by walleye, bit by northerns and slimed by all. It's a weird feeling to be on the water 30 days straight and not be able to fish for myself. I would never trade anything in the world for my job as a full time guide, but it is much more work than most people think. Here's a fishing tip for Front Range walleye anglers: If you're fishing in stained waters, in my opinion, noise and vibration goes a lot further than scent. When playing in muddy water go with a loud vibrating bait. This will draw the fish in from a great distance than a leech or crawler would.
