There are many reasons we fish, as many perhaps as there are fishermen. We each come to it with our own history, our own perspectives. For some it is about night fishing for catfish in a southern lake, for others it is about enticing a brook trout to take a tiny dry fly from a small stream, and still others it is about trolling the deep blue for giant marlin. We are all different, we all have different approaches, with different goals and desires.
And yet we are all one. We are fishermen. We share common traits, common goals. We understand each other.
One of those shared goals is to find inner stillness. In this we are the same.
Deep meditation, deep prayer, and fishing share this one thing - finding an inner stillness. Finding that place inside where thoughts stop and simply being as a conscious being starts. That is the place where peace and tranquility resides. That stillness is a place impossible to find while going about our daily lives with all of the attendant distractions that ensue.
While we are fishing we slip into a state of mindful hopefulness. We are aware of our surroundings, aware of our actions, but we also become still inside. Distractions disappear. The mind stops sending out all those intertwined and interlocked thoughts. We don't think about the past and we don't worry about the future. We just are. Peace and tranquility find us there. Our battered souls are healed and restored in that place. We become one with the universe as our breathing and heart actually slow down.
Until a fish strikes.
