High School Fishing

High school fishing is very big in southern states such as Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi where there are substantial bass fisheries. Unfortunately Colorado is not known for bass fishing but that doesn't mean that there aren't great opportunities to get into bass fishing and competitive bass fishing. Over the last few years Pueblo West High School's team formed an amazing bass fishing team named Cyclone Anglers after their school mascot. Now more and more schools are seriously looking into high school fishing teams.
Every year there is an annual tournament for these high schools. It is called the SAF (Student Angler Federation) State High School Championship. This is a team event were two anglers pair up and fish to represent their school. This year it was held at Pueblo Reservoir where 19 teams were ready to battle it out for a chance to make it to regionals. Cold fronts and fluctuating water flows had the fish all messed up. Many anglers found pre-spawn fish and some found fish on beds. All boats caught fish and many were plagued with short fish. I am very happy to announce that the team consisting of myself and Bradley Czosnyka placed first and are the state champions for Colorado. We found a consistent pattern of back in the coves and were the only team to fill a five fish limit weighing in at 8.9 pounds. From here we will be headed to regionals which will be likely held in Clear Lake, California and the chance to get scholarship money if we make it to nationals.
High school fishing can't be done without the help of awesome mentors and club directors such as Sam Heckman. Sam is the TBF youth director for Colorado and has been the driving force for high school fishing in Colorado and can't be thanked enough for all his time and dedication. I would encourage many of the high schoolers or parents on the site to get a club started in your school so that we can have even more competitors next year. If anybody has any questions about getting into high school fishing or starting a team, feel free to give me a email via my skipper link and I would love to help you out. Thanks!
