Clouser Pattern Detailed - New Article

Blog by: Matt Snider 12/16/2011 (Return to blogs)
As previously mentioned I am not much of an experimenter when it comes to switching fly patterns and lures.  I was hooked on Clousers when I first met one, and rarely stray far from the pattern.  What do big fish eat?  Other fish.  What does a Clouser pattern imitate?  Those fish.

I don't have a whole lot of time anymore to tie flies, but this is the one I do make time for.  I usually don't buy them from shops - I prefer to add my own secret touches to the pattern.  And like Dave expresses in his article, "Clouser Minnow", there's more than meets the eye when you look at this fairly simple lead-eye and wing fly.

With slight modifications you can alter the fly's sink rate, its length, its profile, and obviously its color.  It is a multi-use tool that can reach many different depths and produce many different presentations.  Dave's article covers the variations in detail.

Enjoy!

I agree. The clouser is an awesome pattern. I wished I would have thought of it. I use the clouser for bass, pan fish, pike and even ocean fish. The clouser is a great fly to throw in the surf down in the gulf coast.

Clouser Minnow is my favorite all around fly, no question. Bob Clouser tied me a couple of them a few years back and they're kept in my office for posterity...that's sums up how I feel about the fly. Nice work, Dave and I'm with ya Matt - if it ain't broke, don't fix it. CL
