The City of San Diego completed construction of Barrett Dam in 1922, impounding the flows of Cottonwood and Pine Valley creeks. Located 35 miles east of San Diego, Barrett was closed for many years behind locked gates. Since 1994 access has been offered Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays through a reservation only system.

The lake is located approximately 35 miles east of San Diego, is open for fishing on a limited basis. Barrett Junction Road is closed. From Interstate 8, turn right on Japatul Valley Road, left on Lyons Valley Road, 6 miles to gate. From Highway 94, turn left on Honey Springs Road, right on Lyons Valley Road, 1.7 miles to gate.
