Originally called Crane Valley Reservoir, Bass Lake’s name came about when a lumber company was force to restock the lake after polluting the waters resulting in a total fish kill. The first dam was built in 1901 on Willow Creek, and subsequently rebuilt in 1910 to form the present day reservoir. Today these waters are used to generate electricity, irrigation, and recreation.
