Coming from the west to Grand Mesa area, the Mesa Lakes grouping, which includes South Mesa Lake, is the first encounter of the 100 plus fishable waters on the mesa. Easy access is only one of the reasons for the areas popularity. Other appealing points include developed campgrounds, picnic sites, a lodge offering a restaurant, fishing tackle, and cabins.
From the town of Mesa, go south on Hwy 65 13.7 miles to access road on right just past Jumbo Reservoir. Follow access road 0.3 miles, to the parking lot at the end of the road, at Mesa Lake. Walk across the Mesa Lake dam, and turn right onto a well marked trail (FS 503) which will lead to South Mesa Lake after a relatively easy 0.5 mile hike.
