The Indian Peaks area became part of the National Wilderness Preservation System in 1978. The Indian Peaks Wilderness is 76,586 acres. Adjacent to Rocky Mountain National Park's southern boundary, the Indian Peaks is one of the most often-visited wilderness areas in the United States. -USFS

Getting there:
Take Highway 72 north from Nederland for approximately eight miles to Ward. Turn west on Forest Road 112 and travel about five miles to the Brainard Lake Recreation Area and the Long Lake Trailhead. From the Long Lake Trailhead you can take the trail to the lake and walk around either the north side or south sides of the lake.
