Lake: Antero Reservoir

Lost items - ball of spawning fish?

Post By: catchem      Posted: 10/4/2020 11:13:17 PM     Points: 124
Fished Antero Sat Oct 3. At one point I realized that my rain jacket was not in the boat, not a huge loss, except my wallet and keys were in the pockets! Fortunately I had spare keys. I expect it is in the bottom of the lake somewhere, but thought I would put up a post just in case it washed up on shore or got picked up. Also, anyone know how I would go about contacting the boat inspection people? CPW or Denver Water?

8 fish for two of us, largest 19' rainbow.

Also, we saw a tight ball of a couple dozen fish in about 3 feet of water, thought it was weeds until we spooked them and they took off. They came back to the exact spot within minutes. Could not see what type of fish they were. We did see some rainbows streaking through the area moving very fast. Spawning browns or splake? We did catch a splake not very far from the spot. Anyone know what this was?

Many of the SP lakes have bows and cutts who spawn in the fall. I guess it is because of how they were hatched/raised in the hatchery. I caught a nice 20 inch cutt from the Mile last week in full dazzling color. Saw a few cruisers going through the ritual also. Not a large number but hey......... Just dont attribute it to da Cobid or "climate" change..............lol...........

Not likely to have been spawning Splake, unless we have been mislead about them being a sterile hybrid. Many of the hatchery raised fish seem to have confused timetables on when to spawn. I occasionally catch rainbows when ice fishing that are spawning.

Browns. Antero is now a collection site for Brown Trout eggs. Were the nets out in the bay area by the boat ramps?

While Splake are sterile, they still go through the spawning ritual, so it is very likely they were Splake. Before the last extended closure of the lake, I would consistently see pods of Splake and Kokanee spawning 1 -3 ft of water along the North shore towards the false inlet. I have not ventured to that area of the lake during the fall in quite sometime though. Seems a bit early for the kokanee in Antero to be spawning, but I hear they're running the dream stream, so maybe.

MtnMan84 - thanks for the information about Splake going through the spawning ritual regardless of their sterility. I learn new things from these threads all the time. Good stuff.

I fished Antero Tuesday and noticed the brown trout gathering nets in several places.
I had heard they weren’t going to do it with the CoVid but obviously that was not true.
One that wasn’t in the traps on Tuesday.
