Lake: Antero Reservoir

Antero Reservoir Strange two mouth trout

Post By: Anteroman      Posted: 7/4/2020 3:11:18 PM     Points: 5440
Iíve seen a number of strange things over the years but this little guy was most unusual.
I caught this little stocker Friday and when I went to remove the fly, I noticed it had two mouths. From what I could see it looked like the fish had some damage to its lower jaw, apparently it healed up and the path from the lower opening was straight to the gullet just as the upper was. Iíve never seen anything like this.
I guess it was my day for strange stuff, as I usually do, I was fishing two rods, I hooked and fought an Nice 20Ē fish right up to the net, I had pulled my other rod out of the way and had it sitting in the rod holder, as I went to net the fish it surged away from me and broke off, slightly disappointed until I notice the other rod taking off, somehow he managed to snag the big dry fly on the second rod and I landed him. The ball of flies if our of them are in the net with the trout.

Did another little mouth come out of that mouth and eat your fly?

Wow, thatís different. Iíve fished a long time and have not seen a ďsurvivingĒ fish that looked like that. Obviously the little dude is eating or would you call that swallowing. Lol. Even his mama thought he was ugly...!

Maybe someone caught him and started to clean him for the grill but he got away? He's gonna need a bib now!

My son caught a small (12"?) rainbow at Antero yesterday (8/13) and the tippet went in the mouth through a hole in the lower jaw and the fly "foul hooked" outside the mouth. Hadn't seen that kind of hook-up before.

itís a lower mouth injury from either deformity or most likely trauma from being caught once before and tearing the soft palate off the jaw
