Houston Oilman's Bass Club

Contact: President Alan Stubblefield
Club History

Several oil field friends in the Houston area started fishing together in jackpot tournaments in 1979. The more they fished together the more it made sense to form a club. The Houston Oilman's Bass Club was formed in 1985 with fifteen oil industry employees as it's maiden membership. They fished for money pots in the beginning. Those that had time to participate did well and a few dominated the purses. This left many of the membership with little incentive to continue. About that time the oil industry was experiencing a dramatic downturn and the focus was more on finding and keeping a job rather than fishing. In 1987, after three years of ups and downs in participation, the club was disbanded.

In 1989, the oil industry was beginning to show signs of stability again and the club was re-formed. The club also became affiliated with the Bass Anglers Sportsmen Society as a member of the Texas B.A.S.S. Federation. The constitution was revised to promote participation and reward those who put forth the effort to fish club tournaments. A member who catches one fish per tournament will finish with a respectable standing at year end. Since that time, membership has grown to as high as 85 and participation remains consistent.

Focuses for the club continue to be catch & release, practicing conservation on the water, voicing our individual views on protecting local fisheries, promoting the sport in general and having a good time in the process. There is no shortage of laughter as there are always some good story tellers on hand. And as everyone knows, a good story teller cannot be outdone.

Many club members also actively support several nonprofit organizations the Paralyzed Veterans Association (PVA) Texas bass tournament event and CastingKids. Over 50% of our members participate in several annual Oilfield tournaments that benefit the Texas Children's Hospital.

If membership in our club interests you, and your income is derived from the oil industry, click on the Want to Join button for an application and instructions on how to get involved.
