A strange thing happend on the way to weigh in

We were both pumped, as we took off to fish the TTZ Wed evening team tournament on Lake Austin. I was pumped to team up with well known and respected central Texas expert, Don Gordon for our "first time" fishing together.
We started the tournament in a great spot, and immediately missed three fish. an hour later, when it started getting dark (we fish from 6:30 - 10:00) we still did not have a single keeper. We started scrambling, and somehow managed four good fish in pitch dark, with twenty minutes to go. We knew we needed one more good one to fill out our five fish limit, or it wasn't worth going to weigh-in, which was about a 15 minute ride away. Well, we caught a 4 1/2 pounder, battened down the hatches, and started down a winding pitch black Lake Austin, with dock lights to guide our way. By this time, I'm really pumped. It's dark, it's cool, we are going to weigh-in in the dark, with about 12 minutes to make a 5 mile run!
About 1/2 way there, Don jumped on the back deck to catch a fish that had somehow jumped out of the live well, I never slowed down. When we got to weigh-in, we were missing one of our fish. Another fish had jumped out!
Don is 63, and I'm 62 and we have been doing this a long time, and this has never happened to either of us! We did not know how to react. That flying fish probably cost us a check.
One thing we do know. That will never happen to us again. We will make sure our live well lids are secured and locked!

Ouch, that hurts.

Funny story. Having fun, sharing time and knowing what you accomplished (whether documented with a check or not) is Way more important to me. Many guys get their kicks continually bragging on their fishing prowess. I generally find these guys ^ to be great bores. :)

Sorry about that Dave! That must have stung!

We were OK with missing a check, but not pleased with ourselves having made a mental error. We DID NOT batten down all the hatches....and yes we did enjoy the trip!
