Fishing Conditions on the Brazos

by: Lloyd Tackitt 8/14/2013

Tell me about your fishing conditions.

Here the river is really low and choked with moss.  It's not completely unfishable, but it's close.  Is there such a thing as a weedless fly?  I sure need one.

Even when I do catch one, it's just drag it through the moss, which makes it feel like I'm pulling in a heavy clump of something that doesn't fight.  Wading through the moss leaves leeches on my feet and ankles.  Not big ones, little tiny ones, but dozens of them.

And I don't tolerate heat as well as I did when I was younger.  That means either early morning or late evening fishing.  Since I get up - against my will as it were - at 4am every work day I don't much cotton to getting up early on my days off.  That leaves evenings, which are still hot, in fact evenings are about the hottest part of the day since everything has had the sun beating on it all day and have absorbed heat the way a gas pump absorbs money.  And the breeze always seems to die in the evening too.

If this sounds like whining...it is!  This is my least favorite time of year to fish the river.  Fall and spring are my favorite and I don't mind winter at all.  But these summer doldrums are the low point of my fishing year.

Still I get nine excellent months every year so I'm not really complaining.  Well not much.  Okay I am but whining can be fun sometimes.

So, tell me about your fishing conditions.  What do you do to beat the summer doldrums?

Ran across some good advice the other day, totally off subject but worth sharing.  "Never slap a man while he's chewing tobacco."

I just keep fishing, although cooler high country waters are far more appealing during the summer months.

Fine words Lloyd! My wife is very much getting tired of me whining about the last few weeks of monsoon rains cooling down the ponds and slowing my catch! You're right somtimes it's fun to complain! The best part is that we know it will get better. B But th sooner the better!!

I head to the high country or fish at night. Right now we have the catfish derby going on in Colorado but no luck so far...
