The Zapata County boat ramp looked like Afganasan this morning at 7:00 a.m. A cold front hit about 5:15 a.m. and it was blowing 30 with gusts to 40. Sand was blowing so hard we all had a hard time seeing and breathing.
The tournament officials decided to fish the final event day tomorrow vs. today, so I'm staying another day, as ESPN decided my boat would film Rick Clunn (at my urging). I'm excited to be able to see up close and personal, a possible record setting event for the greatest angler of all time. I've competed against him, and have the ultimate respect!
Rick was in the water and ready to go this morning, and probably would have won if the event had happened today. He is fishing very close to the boat ramp in more protected water, and in the last two days recorded the heaviest stringers of his career....and one of the most amazing of careers!
Others are fishiing as much as 20 miles away, and may not have been able to get to their spots, much less fish them.
Rick was actually in favor of cancelling today, even though he said he thought he had a 90% chance of winning today in these conditions....knowing where he is fishing, and where the others are fishing, I'd say it was more like a 95% chance.
Stay tuned. We are filming the greatest angler of all time tomorrow! We'll have some great coverage on bassmaster.com and later on ESPN.
Yes, I want Rick to win!
