Spring Crappie Fishing?
by: Lloyd Tackitt 3/4/2013

Technically speaking it's not spring Crappie fishing time yet - or is it?

I've been hearing rumors here and there that the Crappie are starting to bed up already.  I haven't done much crappie fishing in a long time, but I would really love to have a few big slabs in the freezer.  Crappie is the best eating fresh-water fish I know of, with bluegills being a very close second.

So, here's my question - Is anyone out there getting good Crappie action?  If you are, please let us all know.  You don't need to give up your hot spots, but it would be interesting to hear what kind of spot it is and what kind of bait is working.

On a side note, I am mostly a catch and release fisherman - but not where Crappie are concerned.  I don't catch these fellas for the fight, I catch them for to eat.  I wonder if anyone catches and releases Crappie?  Sound off if you do!

Thanks for reading this and please feel free to bang in with your thoughts or results.

I actually catch and release most of my catch, including crappie. I will agree they are fine table fare and a few for dinner do hitch a ride home.
