Stink Bait and Catfish

by: Lloyd Tackitt 1/27/2013

I'm reminded by rebelsportsman's recent posts that catfishing is still good this time of year.  And that reminds me of a classic stink bait my uncle made and used.

My uncle made a stink bait that was phenomenally effective at catching catfish.  It was powerful stuff.  Powerful enough that on more than one occasion he ran other fisherman off the bank when he opened it up.  It took dedication to fish with this stuff, but man did it work.

He mixed equal parts of limburger cheese with raw hamburger meat, blending them thoroughly.  Then he mixed in flour until he got a stiff mass that would stay on a hook.  He used treble hooks for ths.  The mixture was then wrapped in wax paper and placed inside an empty coffee tin, the plastic lid snapped back on and then the can put in the tool box on his pickup truck to "mellow" for several days.

In the summer it might mellow in two days, in the winter it might take a couple of weeks, all depending on the weather.  Faster results could have been achieved in the winter by keeping it in the house - but for some reason his wife didn't think that such a good idea.

I recall one time we went to the spill way, my uncle and my oldest brother and myself.  We took position as far from the nearest people we could, but it was a nice day and there wasn't a whole lot of room, many people were fishing.  My uncle popped the lid on his latest batch of "stink" and began baiting his hook.  Eeegads that was awful, made your eyes water and the stomach heave a bit.

Within minutes the young couple nearest us downwind got up and left.  Pretty soon everyone down wind had left.  After a while the people upwind began leaving too.  In less than an hour we had the place to ourselves.  And we caught catfish, lots of them.

I don't even know where you can buy limburger cheese now days, but there's bound to be some out there somewhere.  I recommend this bait - I also recommend my uncle's approach of not taking it into the house.

For these slow days in the fishing south give catfishing a try, but be careful with the stink bait, you might not make friends.

Might have to mix up a bit of that to clear out a bit of space when fishing some of the more popular waters.

Nice receipe. My recipe is equally successful and it does stink but you may not lose as many friends as it has a more natural fragrance but works great for cats cause it has a natural time release effect and is easy to handle. Breafast of Catfish ------------------------ rubber gloves- if you have to be around women after making snelled bait hooks 1 large zip lock bag 1 large bowl 1 box of wheaties breakfast cereal 1 can of cheap beer mix beer & wheaties in bowl by hand & crunch the mix to doughy consistency. make small dough balls about size of ping pong balls & place on snelled hooks just above eye of hook with line thru center of bait. lay out on wax paper to dry hard as a rock -(preferrably in the garage or outhouse if you are lucky enough to have one.) when dry, place pre-baited hooks in zip lock bag. freeze in beer/bait frigde in garage- if you have one, if not check craigslist. Go fishin. FYI-This bait smells just like a rednecks old sweat sock that he used to wipe his butt with in the woods after a 3 day fishin trip with his other brother Darrell.

went i was fishing carp tournaments i would make chum from buckets of spoiled grain. It smelled like a brewery gone bad and got worse . I left some in a bucket with a lid for several months. it reeked of raw sewage when i popped the lid off and within 10 minutes hundreds of blow flies showed up . one five gallon bucket was enough to cause a major feeding frenzy. Carp, catfish, shad and even bass showed up for the party. the shad sides i forgot in my were priceless too when my car filled up with black blow flies . i was temped to tell the guy at the auto shop that i left the hitchhiker in my car for too long.

I'll bet it it would work on fly and lure only fisheries just as well!
