Anyone Up For a Fishing Challenge?
by: Alan Peak , Colorado3/13/2012
I like making video.  It conveys some of the excitement that photographs perhaps leave out.  Here is my idea to shoot a video this summer.  I have been playing around with some ideas and this one will be a little different.

I want to catch 13+ species of fish in 24 hours.. I will be shooting it in true 3d.  Can't find any examples of this being done in Colorado.

Anyone interested?  Tentatively, I will be shooting for 24 hours July 6th, 7th.  If you want to be on it contact me for the details.  It will be set to music, so you will not have to talk or say anything.  If you are worried about giving up a honey hole I can take only underwater and face 3d shots.  Size of fish does not matter.  Preferably from shore, but I have a kayak that I will shoot from.

Here is my tentative species list.  "Check" means that I am confident that I can catch one in fairly short order.

1. Bluegill - check
2. Tiger - check
3. Rainbow - check
4. Cutthroat - check
5. Saugeye - check
6. Pike - check
7. Largemouth - check
8. Lake Trout -
9. Smallmouth -
10. Brown -
11. Sucker -
12. Brook - check
13. Splake - check
14. Wiper -
15. Walleye -
16. Catfish -
17. Bullhead -
18. Carp -
19. Perch - check
20. Crappie -

Someone will inevitably ask, "What is the point, are you insane?"  First and foremost, I like to make fishing more than a sport done from a folding chair.  I think you can take the sport of fishing to pretty extreme lengths; film can capture it.  Second, after talking with some members here on the website, they said that it would be an interesting benchmark to see if they could beat it.  Normally, you can only beat size records.  I wonder what it would look like to set records according to time.  Not only is this a fishing challenge, but a logistical one as well.  I expect that I will be hitting lakes from Pueblo to Ft. Collins.  Time will tell.

Suggestion- maybe hit up each lake skipper for your possible lakes of interest and have them setup a get together on those lakes at times you likely be visiting. I know most people will be willing to help.

I was definitely thinking about that Ron. There are a lot of lakes off the beaten path for this one. Going to try to get a bluegill in less than five minutes at Sinton Pond. The first lake will be hiked into the night prior and that will be my starting point.

You can put a check next to the crappie, brown trout, lake trout, and carp. I got some spots that I feel confident you can fill those.

A Tiger in "fairly short order?" Ahaha, you must have a honey hole for that one!

Dangly, CO   3/14/2012 2:03:46 PM
starting in the springs? if so i think I can give you some spots that won't require going to Ft. collins. ebabcock@triadisotopes.com

My fishing log gets pretty sporadic at Pueblo in July, but can guarantee some walleye, spots, smallies, and wiper at the least. Let me know if yeah need the help! Sounds like a great idea, even if you don't make the list, the film would still be cool.

Alan, would you consider it cheating if you had other people out that day prepping spots with gear / boat / whatever or would that be wrapped in the logistics?

TigerHunter, CO   3/30/2012 12:34:11 PM
Awesme.... I wrote an article in F&H News 5 years ago when my cousin Jeremy tried to catch as many species as we could in 24 hours. Can't remember the number but I think it was 8...Didn't get the number we were shooting for but it was a total blast!!! Really shows how many great options anglers have in Colorado.

Alan Peak (moosegoose), CO   3/30/2012 5:14:02 PM
Vanish, I am going to try to get as many on my own as possible. I have lots of little tricks, like, for example, I will not be wasting time targeting rainbows. They will just happen. Lakes will be chosen based on availability of species and species must overlap.

Eddie13, CO   4/18/2012 12:09:58 PM
HA! I'm lucky to catch 3 different species all year!! I'm not scaring any fish when I'm out there - mostly I hear chuckles and some laughter coming from underwater at Monument Lake and 11 Mile Res. I gotta try something new this year...... Good luck Alan!!

Who is this guy?

Desertsky, CO   4/20/2012 12:57:54 PM
Spinney for rainbows and pike, down to the dreamstream for browns and cuttys, back to the springs for all the warm water stuff! I could go for that!

troutamer, CO   4/20/2012 8:36:04 PM
You can get the Laker, Brown, Sucker, Rainbow, Cutthroat, and Sageye, all up in the Granby/Grand Lake area. This is where I fish the most. I can give you some tips if you plan on going up that way. Best of luck on this adventure.

FISHRANGLER, CO   4/20/2012 9:31:18 PM
You may be able to tun this in to some kinda fundrasier or something like that. Just something to think about.

Alan Peak (moosegoose), CO   4/21/2012 9:37:14 PM
FishRangler - Interesting idea. Per fish pledges?
