One of several high mountain reservoirs located near Cameron Pass, Barnes Meadow is frequently overlook despite being located along Colorado 14 and in close proximity to Chambers Lake. Several factors may contribute to its relative obscurity, such as lack of signage, no visibility from the road (the dam is), Chambers Lake is just across the highway, and there are numerous better know fisheries just up the road. Whatever the reason, this strictly walk-in fishery offers easy access to a under utilized trout fishery.

The surrounding area is covered by lodgepole pine and aspen on south- and east-facing slopes and by Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir on north and west aspects. Fishing is the primary recreational activity at this high elevation reservoir (just over 9,000 ft.). Boating is permitted, but is limited to hand launched craft, no gas motors, although electric motors are allowed. Camping is available across the road at Chambers, as it is not allowed around the reservoir. Hiking and wildlife viewing are two other opportunities for visitors. Especially popular are the increasingly abundant moose that reside in the area.

The primary fish anglers will encounter are rainbows, cutthroat, and cutbows, all of which the Colorado Division of Wildlife stock on a regular basis. The fish typically run in the 10-16 inch range, with an occasional larger specimen. Historically, other species have been stocked, such as brook trout browns, but neither has been reported recently. Other species in the reservoir include lake trout (rare), suckers, and lake chub. Anglers should note that the east shore is privately owned.

Getting there: From Fort Collins, take US 287 north to Colorado Hwy14 west. Barnes Meadow is located along Hwy. 14 just east of Cameron Pass opposite the access road to Chambers Lake. Limited road side parking is available south of the dam.
Fees: None
Boating: Electric Motors Only. Hand launched only, electric motors allowed, no gas motors.
Ice Fishing: Permitted
