Dixon Reservoir, Fort Collins Colorado - Dixon Reservoir sitting in the shadow of it larger neighbor Horsetooth Reservoir should not be over looked, as it supports a healthy population of generally cooperative largemouth bass, sunfish, and crappie.
Dixon is a fishing gem frequently passed by, as it sits the shadow of Horsetooth Reservoir’s shadow. Maybe that’s why this forty acre reservoir remains such a productive fishery. It sports a solid population of largemouth bass, bluegill, pumpkinseeds, green sunfish, and crappie. The spring and early summer often produces non stop action, before this shallow reservoir’s abundant weeds take over. Other species include carp and catfish.
Embedded in the City of Fort Collin’s 618 acre Pineridge Natural Area, Dixon offers great opportunities to hike or mountain bike on its three miles of trails. Wildlife observation is also popular, especially for birds, as over 150 species have been recorded. Being a natural area, such activities as camping, motorized equipment, walking dogs off-lease, walking off-trailand, and ice fishing are prohibited.
Getting there: From US 287 (College Avenue) and Prospect in Fort Collins, take Prospect west to South Overland Trail. Go south to Dixon Canyon Road (Cty Rd 42 C), then west, as you start up the hill, the entrance to the Pineridge parking lot will be on the left. Fees: No fees Boating: Non Motorized Hand-Launch. Float tubes or craft propelled by hand, wind or electric motor only.
7/27/2010 - Dixon Reservoir - Fishing has been decent, but with some of the warmer days, mornings and evenings have been working better. Bluegill have been hitting relatively well. The vegetation is definitely starting to make its way in and so weedless patterns are definitely going to be better.
