Located approximately five miles from Victor in southeastern Teller County, Skaguay Reservoir is one of the more scenic reservoirs. The drive alone, through the mountainous terrain, is worth the trip. As the crow flies, Skaguay is close to Colorado Springs. However, the Pikes Peak range makes a direct route impossible, thus the reservoir as a reputation as a place to get away from the crowds. While fishing is a primary draw, this state wildlife area also offers primitive camping, wakeless boating (ideal for canoes and kayaks), wildlife viewing, and hiking.

Rainbow and cutthroat are the primary species angler can expect to encounter. CDOW has been actively stocking Skaguay since it was refilled in 2005, as a result anglers are finding a much improved fishery. The majority of the trout are in the 10-14 inch range. While scarce, there is a population of northern pike. Most are small, 20-30 inches, with an occasional fish approaching 40 inches. There is no limit on northern pike and anglers are encouraged to harvest them. This will help to minimize trout predation while maximizing northern pike growth. Those looking for northerns should consider starting at the inlet area, where the best pike habitat is located.

For those who enjoy stream fishing coupled with a little walking, Beaver Creek below the reservoir offers good trout fishing. Anglers can expect to encounter numerous, cooperative rainbows, cutthroats, browns, and an occasional brookie. Fishing is typically better further downstream from the dam, as the number of fishers drops off quickly.

2009 CDOW Fishing Forecast

This lake was filled in 2005 and should be full in 2009. Catchable trout are stocked throughout the summer providing good action for anglers. They range in size from 10-14 inches. Though scarce, this reservoir supports a population of northern pike that average 24 inches with fish approaching 40 inches in length. There is no limit on northern pike. Anglers are encouraged to catch and harvest these toothy predators. This will help to minimize trout predation while maximizing northern pike growth (more food for fewer fish). The inlet area offers the best habitat for northern pike. Angler facilities are good at Skaguay Reservoir and include a concrete boat ramp, parking, and restrooms. Wakeless boating is required. Beaver Creek below the reservoir offers good brown trout fishing for the stream fishing enthusiast.

Getting there: From Victor (20 miles southwest of Colorado Springs), go 1/2 mile east on County Road 67 to County Road 86, then 1 mile south (right) to County Road 861, and then 6 1/2 miles east (left) to the reservoir.
Fees: Habitat Stamp required.
Boating: Wakeless. Boating prohibited if it creates a whitewater wake.
Ice Fishing: Ice fishing is allowed
