Joe Wright Reservoir, Walden Colorado - This special regulations lake is an excellant grayling fishery . CDOW is working to improve the size through limited stockings of Muskie and Lake trout.
Joe Wright sits close to the Continental Divide east of Cameron Pass. The grayling fishery makes up for in numbers what it lacks in size. Tiger muskie were planted to help reduce sucker populations and maybe a few grayling as well. A few mature lake trout were introduced to help, and it appears the grayling have prospered with larger fish, over 15 inches being reported. The lake also has decent rainbow and cutthroat trout fishing. It is a difficult lake to navigate when full as the shoreline is heavily forested. From the main parking lot, follow a developed trail to the north to access the lake.
Special Note: There are very few lake trout in Joe Wright and are there specifically to help the grayling population thrive. If you catch a lake trout at Joe Wright, please consider releasing it.
Getting there: Lake sits to the south of Highway 14 just east of Cameron Pass. There is a large parking lot on the south side of the road towards the north end of the lake. Very limited parking at south and north ends of lake. Fees: No fees Boating: Non Motorized Hand-Launch. Hand Launched, no gas motors.
9/1/2010 - Joe Wright Reservoir - Fishing has been going good all around the lake. Late day storms have been putting the fish down from time to time, but the rest of the time fishing has been good. As usual most of the fly patterns work well, but the good stand bys are still working too. Bead head prince nymphs and adams are always popular. The traditional lures, Mepps, and Roostertails, are working as well. 1. Fishing is prohibited from January 1 through July 31 on Joe Wright Creek from the confluence with the reservoir upstream to Highway 14. 2. Fishing is by artificial flies and lures only. 3. The bag and possession limit for trout (except grayling) is two fish.
