Wolford Mountain Reservoir, Kremmling Colorado - Wolford Mountain Reservoir; the Colorado River District and the Colorado Division of Wildlife have steadily stocked it since its opening. Excellent open water and ice fishing opportunities are available.
Wolford Mountain Reservoir is one of Colorado's newest reservoirs. The lake is located just outside of Kremmling and provides fishing for mainly splake, kokanee and trout. The lake extends for over 5 miles and provides decent structure along its shores for you to fish. Being one of the newest reservoirs in Colorado, you can see that it does not show up on the map provided. You can switch to the satellite view to see the lake. Limited camping and recreational use other than boating is provided at Wolford. The lake sits along the road from Kremmling to Steamboat Springs. The campground area offers boat rentals, water skiing equipment, and picnic sites.
CDOW 2009 Survey Notes
One northern pike was captured in 2008 also, representing less than 1% of the total catch. Splake were stocked in Wolford in 1999 and 2000, and the occasional old fish still appears in the catch. They were stocked as a measure to attempt to control sucker populations. However, splake will not be stocked again until it is clear whether or not the northern pike will proliferate. The roundtail chub population in Wolford is unique for a reservoir in the area. This fish is normally found in the lower Colorado and Yampa river drainages. It is a state species of concern.
Brown trout numbers have steadily increased since the fish were initially stocked in 2002. The drop in catch in 2008 is most likely attributable to the lake being colder than normal, and the fish less active, when the netting took place. There does not appear to be a large amount of good spawning habitat for brown trout in Wolford, but the potential for growth is good considering the abundance of crayfish. Because of this, in 2008 numbers of fingerling brown trout stocked were tripled from 20,0000 (which was the standard number the lake had been receiving) to 60,000. Increased numbers of fingerling brown trout will continue to be stocked, depending on availability. If the northern pike population proliferates and begins to limit the recruitment of these fingerling brown trout (which has not yet been observed), this stocking strategy will change.
