Lower Big Creek was a small natural lake set up in the mountains before a small dam was developed and formed the larger lake we use today. Set high up against the continental divide west of Cowdrey, CO, the lake offers fantastic fishing, private camping, a plethora of trails for hiking and horseback riding, and recreational boating. So bring your water-skis if you don't mind the cold water which generally stays at or below 60 degrees all summer. The road from Cowdrey is a mostly washboard dirt road and it often proves difficult when towing a boat or a large camper. The campgrounds are busy during the summer weekends but generally during the week there usually is not problem finding a walk-in campsite. A horse stable area in the northwest campground facilitates horse trailer parking and camping with your horses.

Getting there: From Walden go north 9 miles to Cowdrey. Go west at Cowdrey on CR 6W for 18 miles to Pearl. Take FS Road 600 for 6 miles, following signs to campground.

Fees: No daily pass required. Camping is $10 per night.
Some campsites may be reserved online at reserveusa.com.
Boating: All Boats Allowed. Wakeless speeds 75 yards from shore. No docks available to moor boats. Can moor boats on shore.
Ice Fishing: Ice fishing allowed, access roads not plowed

Big Creek Lake campgrounds are terrific, with nice separation form neighbors, with access to plenty of activities. About half the sites are reservable. If you`re going to visit on the weekend, come early or reserve your site online. If you want to reserve a site, you`ll often have to do so months in advance. There are some non-developed tent areas accessible by boat or a rough hike, but are well worth it.

The North East campgrounds are imediately to your left as you reach the fork at the lake on the road in. A loop will take you around the sites. Trailer and extra vehicle parking is close to these sites. Many sites have a slight view of the lake. All are within a short walking distance of shoreline. We have had no problems navigating our boat trailer around these sites, although you may have trouble parking your trailer at some sites. A few of the sites have very adequate room for your trailer. Water is available, but untreated. Restrooms are outhouses.

These are located right near the north boat ramp. Water is available, but untreated. Restrooms are outhouses.
