you need a boat, go deep. big reservoirs hold smallies. Aurora, chatty, so on...... they are still tough to find though.....

There are still bass to be had. Most of mine have come from local ponds where they either pounce on an 8" Hudd that is retrieve just above the bottom with frequent long pauses on the bottom (we're talking 1 - 2 minutes deadstick) or on a deadsticked Matt Lures Hard Gill (floating) that is twitched a foot or two every minute or so. It makes for some long (time) casts, but you still get a few.

Why small ponds? Well, you can generally cast into the deepest water available while standing on shore. It's kind of hard to do that in bigger lakes.

I'm not going to give up on bass fishing until my lures are bouncing off the ice.

Fish Dr,
Im from Pennsylvania, so I LOVE ponds, especially without a boat as i am now....can you point me in the direction of any ponds that are still productive? I would Greatly appreciate it!!! email-ingakick73@msn.com

Just about any urban pond has bass in them, but you've got to rescale your expectations. What you called ponds in Pennsylvania are about the size of the things we call lakes, and what we call ponds you might call puddles. That being said, our "puddles" do have bass, but because of the very short growing season here (living at 5000' has its disadvantages), a bass might take 7 or more years to get to 15", so even minor harvesting of fish will quickly deplete the populations of the small ponds, and then all you catch are little fish.

The best ponds/lakes for fishing, not surprisingly, are those with very restrictive regulations, like many of the ponds in Boulder County, Quincy Res., Rocky Mountain Arsenal, etc. On the other ponds, you can get into better quality fish from a float tube or pontoon, but again, please limit your harvest of fish 'cause they're all we've got.

Ingakick, good luck getting some inside tips on good bass waters when you post a pic of 3 dead bass on the bank waiting to be put on your dinner table. Like was posted earlier, bassin in this state can only remain in a good stable condition if C&R is practiced.

Fredo, those bass were kept in PENNSYLVANIA, I have no desire to keep fish let alone bass, I fish my A$$ off every day I can and know the difficulties in catching bass. Those are A. average bass in the east and B food for one of my friends family. Where i come from its a good deed to produce food for a hungry family....Please dont make me out to be a bad fisherman or outdoorsman before you know the story.

Back on topic....
I have been struggling massively with the cold fish. All of a sudden they turned off and I am waiting for the ice to come... I kinda gave up yesterday but I have been fishing one of the hardest lakes I have ever fished so it may make a difference.

Here's the last one I caught... Not much but I thought the background looked awesome. Almost like an impressionist painting.

I never once bashed you for keeping fish....and the reason doesn't matter one bit. You can catch and keep bass legally in Colorado. I'm just offering you advice. If you want some tips on good bass waters to fish, do NOT post a pic of some bass that are soon to be eaten by a friend's family.....no matter what state, county, lake, pond, creek, river, country, or planet you caught them in or on. Good luck in your quest.

Thank you Fredo, consider it squashed. lets hope that we both catch the same 8lb. Colorado smallie! Good luck to you also on your fishing quest...

That is a nice LM above, fishing from a boat?

No, actually. Just standing really close to shore... so close that earlier I stepped in the water and was soaked all evening! Stupid grass looked like a sturdy place to stand.

Ingakick,

Welcome to Colorado. . . Don't get discouraged by the slow responses. Most anglers are focusing on ice fishing coming soon. There are plenty of Bass enthusiast here and most of us will be willing to help. FishDr gave some great information and advice. Large and Small Mouth Bass in Colorado is challenging and a lot different than PA. I have fished small mouth on the Susquehanna river near Harrisburg and that was some of the best fishing I have ever experienced. Duplicating that in Colorado will be almost impossible.

Horse tooth, Pueblo, RMA, Pella Ponds, Quincy, Lone Tree are just a few front range waters you can find good Bass on. Check out some of the Bass clubs listed on this site they too will have good information.

Respectfully,
Two Ponies

I had luck out at main res just befor the snow, I was using a slow retrieve on a crank bait that looked like a baby bass. Good luck.

You bet. . . I'm busy guiding some hunts right now but looking forward to some fishing soon. The pictures of me are at Pueblo reservoir (State Park) and the one of Mrs. Two Ponies is at Pella Crossing near Longmont. The fishing is good there right now if you are patient.

Hope to see you out there sometime soon. . . Keep posting.

Two Ponies & Ingakick-
I can vouch for Pella crossing, done very well there and looking into visiting there tomorrow!
I do have a few good spots that my son & I found during cruzin with our f/t. Both SM & LMB- here's an example.

If you get to get out anytime soon -let me know,

Bossman,

I've followed your post and success on other threads out there. . . You sure have those waters figured out. I didn't want to identify these ponds in your other post out of respect for the time you and your son have put in there.

We do very well there too and my good friend THE BASSTARD has recently landed some monsters out there.

Respectfully,
Two Ponies

Amazing info....I'm going to go there tomorrow....only one problem....where is it? im traveling from aurora, I it in boulder county but is there a 'pella crossing lake' or is it a group of lakes?
Thanks again

Two Ponies-
Maybe we can cross paths one of these days, also appreciate the respect of locations! My son & I hook up the fishfinders and do alot of scouting of our locations. We do get a few stares when we are out and about w/ the F/T and cruzin w/ a 3 rod rack and fishfinders going.

Ingakick-
Just google up Pella Crossing- there are a few ponds in the area, C&R only, Boulder county- lots of fun but it can be a challenging day- one day game on the next you well atleast I have to wonder where they all went! But a blast in the F/T!
Let me know if your heading out...
Reply by: Ingakick      Posted: 11/6/2009 7:02:06 PM     Points: 38
I would love to F/T it but since i do not have access to one i would only be working it from the shore, lame i know but im broke.... i'll find out tonight if i have to work in the am. if not im headin there proly around 6-7am

Ingakick-
The park(?) doesn't open until sunrise which is 6:30ish and depending on the drop in temp tonight will give me a clue on what time i plan on arriving. I will be driving the ol' silver Impala and probably hit the top / main pond.

10.4 i'll be in a silver suby...think i can do any good from shore?
Reply by: bossman      Posted: 11/6/2009 7:22:21 PM     Points: 167
I fish probably 75% of the time from the shore, I just work the F/T with my son mostly, but the research has me knowing afew "spots" the around the shorelines.
Probably is going to real slow until the sun hits for a few but we'll take some water temps, the wind may be bringing in the next weather system so we'll see, it was on today with the wind so maybe up against the wind blown side we can get into a few.

Hit the water this morning for a few, tough s-l-o-w presentations needed. Poster the results on a different post.

Still a good day to get out!

me and my friends hit up some boulder county haunts today, and we saw pig bass cruising but they would not touch anything we had to offer them.
