Reply by: Stratosfaction Posted: 9/25/2009 9:50:10 AM Points: 44 This one was caught out of Spinney about 2 weeks ago. She went 38 inches and 14.2 lbs. I usually release all fish but this one took my spinnerbait so deep that she wouldn't have made it had I tried to release her. Deep fried Pike is really tasty! I had one other giant inhale a spinnerbait the same day but she took me deep in the weeds and broke off. It is really cool to see a 40 inch pike come out of the weeds and inhale your spinnerbait!! Reply by: Rip Lip Posted: 9/25/2009 10:16:12 AM Points: 46 Is that first fish a Colorado Pike? I recognize that all the others are, but wasn't sure about the first one. I've been seeing some girthy fish comming out of Spinney, which is a good sign. Here are a couple of fish that I'm proud of over the past couple of years. All from Colorado. Reply by: Rip Lip Posted: 9/25/2009 10:20:10 AM Points: 46 All great fish guys!!! Couple more! The last one is a real GRANDE, but caught by a buddy of mine. All released!!! Reply by: masteroftheloch Posted: 9/25/2009 1:17:32 PM Points: 212 HEY RIP LIP, SOME OF THOS HOGS ARE FROM WILLIAMS FORK RIGHT? CAN YOU HELP ME W/ SOME TIPS. THAT IS WHERE MINE WAS FROM BUT I NEED MAD HELP STILL... CODY Reply by: Rip Lip Posted: 9/25/2009 1:47:38 PM Points: 46 None of them are from Williams fork, but that certainly is one of the more productive pike resevoirs around. Fishing should be good up there right now. This time of year focus on 6 to 12 foot of water. Any weeds you can find are good, but I don't think Williams Fork has a lot of weeds. I don't get the chance to fish Williams Fork much, but I would fish the points close to deeper water on the west side, and fish into the bays a bit. The flats on the SW side of the res hold fish. Huck some spinnerbaits and pause them every now and then, letting them flutter down a bit, then reel again. Jerkbaits can work really well too. Pikin can be great one day and off the next, so time on the water during peak times of year (like now) is your best recipe for success. Enough time on the water and you will encounter some big fish. Good Luck! Reply by: channelcat13 Posted: 9/25/2009 1:57:53 PM Points: 251 OK, I have put these up before but these are probably the southern-most pike in the U.S. right here. These are AZ pike! The big one was 21.25 lbs and the night pike was 18 lbs (note the half tail--it was the result of other crazy, hungary pike). All of these pike came from a water with nothing but pike in them (despite a historical presence of trout)! The two on the balcony were about 15 lbs. All of these puppies were 38-42 inches and they were all caught on frozen chovies! Good pike'n this fall! Here's a couple of releases I thought were cool. Reply by: Lucius Posted: 9/25/2009 11:36:29 PM Points: 153 Nice Pictures everyone. Someone asked if the first photo was from a pike in Colorado, unfortunately the answer is no. It is from Washington state. In fact that was his second trophy caught in his first year of pike fishing (cough cough last year). I guess he as been one of those people to just be blessed by the fishing Gods or something, because I have been chasing a trophy pike (a true 20lber) for 15+ years now and the closest I have come is a 41" 17lber from canada. Close but no cigar. Biggest pike I ever caught in colorado was a 33" pike from spinney and the biggest I ever caught in the lower 48 was a 36" 11lbs in Idaho, but my camera battery died right before I took the picture. Now the one that hurts (not really but I know higher powers probably had something to do with it) was my girlfriend of 3 months (she is now my wife as you can see why) her first time pike fishing and her second time lure fishing she caught this 44" 27lb pike from williams fork on a gizit 6/2/02. 8lb test, no leader last cast of the day. My day will come and hopefully on October 3rd. 1st pic is of my buddy's first pike and trophy pike at that 2nd pic is of my wife's trophy pike 3rd pic of my pike caught from the same river as my buddy last year. I don't target Pike but this thread has me so fired up I think I am going to make a goal of landing one of these beast soon. Expect a lot of questions from me on how to target these monsters in our great state. In the mean time I'm going to go ask Mrs. Two Ponies to raise my lure allowance. Rip Lip, i couldn't agree more! There is something about pike that gets your adrenalin pumping! And they aren't that easy to find(for me at least), but once you do the fun starts! Reply by: Fish44 Posted: 10/6/2009 8:30:49 PM Points: 675 Lucius, Cutlure, Two Ponies hit the nail on the head, " I'm going to ask Mrs. Two Ponies to raise my lure allowance. This season my fishing partner and I have landed 35 pike 32inches or larger on various lakes, using 21 different lures, this shows that there is no magic lure. Big swimjigs/baits, Big Husky Jerks, Big deep diving cranks, anything that Mepps makes thats big. Never use a wire leader. Watch water temps closely 52-58 degrees is when they really put the feed bags on. Last, but certainly not least, understand the forage base, contrary to local opinion, Northern Pike do not gobble up nothing but trout, in fact I can honestly say I have never cleaned a fish with a trout in its belly. Perch taste better, are not as difficult to catch. Remember release all pike over 30 inches, thats how you can catch the 40's. Mr. Two Ponies, ask away and I will do my best. But becareful, it is an addiction! Reply by: Fish44 Posted: 10/6/2009 8:47:27 PM Points: 675 Cutlure, the dates are in order of pictures. 1) 8/2/09 2) 2/21/09 3) 2/28/09 4) 2/21/09 5) 2/24/09 6) 8/2/09 Hey man check your fishing log I am pretty sure you were out on that lake on Feb.21,2009. February fish 2/21/09-2/28/09 water temp 34degrees this was the week that the fish were spawning. Only time of the year to intentionally fish small. Biggest lure taken this time of year was less than 1 inch long, and on 8lb mono, and yes we were targeting the pike like that. Almost forgot, Awesome fish, that chunk looks alot like a Sanchez fish, awesome. Reply by: Two Ponies Posted: 10/6/2009 8:54:29 PM Points: 398 Fish44, Thanks. . . You've answered a lot already. During the cold of winter I will be spending my time building a Dory, rods and tackle. Mrs. Two Ponies did in fact raise my allowance so I will definitely be crafting some lures for Pike. I will post some pictures as I complete them for your advise and comments. Well. . . Off to do some research and order supplies. Sorry if I got the thread off on a tangent. Keep those pictures coming! Respectfully, Two Ponies Reply by: Cutlure Posted: 10/6/2009 9:04:19 PM Points: 177 I was at the lake the 23 i think... your right about the fat one, it was from sanchez. Was the latter picture of the fish you caught 8/2 from sanchez by the island? Reply by: Fish44 Posted: 10/6/2009 9:36:56 PM Points: 675 No, that was at the same lake as 2/21/09. Big fish this year out of sanchez was 37inches, it seams in sanchez if the pike make it to 30+ they are fat and healthy, with the best colors. At Sanchez try the 7 inch jointed Rapala in pike pattern, or Firetiger Musky Maribou. Somehow I always end up chasing the carp with the bow at sanchez. Then J-Rock, can you please tell me why he didn't submit the fish for the state record especially if he kept it anyway (I wonder how many eggs she would have produced in the spring....probably over 1 million if I had to guess). I think it would be awesome to see in the books that we have a state record pike rivaling that of Minnesota fish!! If he is to put us all to shame let make it official!! My nickname for Dan is Mr. Pike Master. I always hear about him catching huge pike all the time (many fish close to 30#s all the time). I need to meet this man and learn his ways. I have been chasing a trophy pike for over a decade and a half and I still don't have one!! I think i am fishing in the wrong spots I guess!!
