Left the house real early this morning, 3am. Got to the lake right before sun up. Not much access to the lake unless I missed something. We had to take the van off road to get near the boat ramp to fish. (the gate to the boat ramp was closed). We fished to the right of the boat ramp. We could have fished the shoreline to the left of the ramp but there was two different people camping and we didn't want to wake them. Set up with sucker meat and a crawler on one rod and started throwing the biggest spoons I have. My sons friend was only using worms and was geting bites non stop but I think it was the crawdads. I had the bites also. I switched lures and tried a silver rat l trap. right away I had a follow in but couldn't see what it was because there was alot of green crap floating in the water. I cast out a few more times and about 2 foot from shore a pike comes out of nowhere and hits the lure. I was already pulling the lure out of the water when he hit. There was no hook set, I just pulled him out and he popped off the hook. He was barely hooked but his lip looked ripped. He was put back right away after the pic. He was a baby.
I then switched up to a 1oz 5 of diamonds daredevil. I had a nice hit told the boys "get the net, get the net" it felt alot bigger and he was peeling drag and then went behind a rock and felt snagged. Gave a tug and I was able to bring him in but he was also a baby. He felt alot bigger lol.
We decided to find another spot and as I was reeling in my bait rod it felt a little heavy. Well what do you know I had another one on. The pike took my work. He also was a baby. He was hooked funky. Looked like he took the worm and spit the hook out of his gill and then ate the hook again and got hooked in the bottom of his mouth. I just cut the line and let him go. I would have had him out of the water too long to un hook him.
We left and headed to find a spot on the west side of the lake. Not much luck finding any good spots so we tried the west sore by the island. I started throwing a small red n white daredevil and I got another baby pike. Where are all the bigger ones? LOL

We left Sanchez and headed to Smith to give it a try for the first time. We pulled up to the lake and I thought it looked very shallow, then I looked over at this island that looked to be close to the middle of the lake and there was a guy sitting on the island and another guy walking in the water to get to the island. Looked like the water was only about ankle deep. Decided to leave and try mountain home res. Got there and there was alot of people camping, fishing and jet skiing. Went with our trout rigs. My wife catches one right away, a small rainbow. The I catch a small rainbow, then my son gets a small rainbow. A storm was blowing in and it got windy as all hell and that is when it was time to pack it up and head home.

It was an alright day, small fish is better than no fish but I would have liked some fish a little bigger lol and the heat just wears you out.

All 4 pike I caught were the same size as the one in the pic. 17 inches.( I measurd one) and the rainbows were maybe 14 inch.

There will be a few more details on the lake update.

Total fish count 8
Me: 4 pike 1 rainbow
My wife: 0 pike 2 rainbows
My son: 0 pike 1 rainbow
Son's friend: NADA

Great report and I love the detail you put into it. Would love to get into some bigger pike/muskie myself... Thanks for sharing though!

Smith was drained late last fall/winter for repairs on the dam. Fishing should rebound in a few.
