Event report: Surf Expo Orlando FL.

Guest Blog by: Danny Barker 9/23/2013

You’re probably wondering what attending the Surf Expo in Orlando has to do with fishing! Little did I know when I was asked to come down and meet Steve Pepper president of Peppers Eyewear, that I would find the answer to my question. Steve showed me the new line up of Peppers Polarized Sunglasses. Peppers has been an innovator in the optical industry for over 20 years. Pushing the limits on creating quality polarized optics at a price point that’s hard to beat. After visiting for a while and meeting the rest of the Peppers crew I decided to go “Surf” the show.

The first stop was at the Freestyle USA booth where I met Chad LaBass and he introduced me to Freestyle sports watches. Here’s their Mission statement:  Performance Timing Simply stated, we are a watch company.  We make sport watches for people who like to go out and have fun, and while we may not play the same sport or have the same passions, we all spend our time breathing, bleeding and sweating the same way.  At the end of the day it’s all about performance, and through the past 30 plus years Freestyle has become synonymous with performance. So here’s where the fishing part comes into play they're coming out with the Mariner watch which will have a tidal chart along with all the standard options including being water proof down 100 plus meters. Having fished tidal water on both coasts I can’t wait to use this great feature!

Second stop in my search for fishing related products was the GoPro booth which was massive by most show standards. GoPro is the top of the line brand of high-definition personal cameras, used in a lot of video photography. They are known for being lightweight, tough, wearable and mountable in such places as outside planes, cars, boats and just about anywhere. The latest and greatest GoPro is the Hero3 Black edition HD camera which is smaller and twice as powerful as the previous version. I talked with media director Jessica Parker about my fishing adventures and my position as the Field Editor for North Central Florida Fish We exchanged cards and agreed that it would be cool for me to do a product review of the new camera. Looking forward to checking out and sharing some of my outdoor trips….Stay Tuned

Then there’s the Loksak Company that makes products to protect items from the elements in the form of plastic products that are the only resealable and completely waterproof, dust proof and humidity proof storage bags on the consumer market. If you’re an outdoor enthusiast or just an everyday person looking to protect your cell phones, electronic, GoPro’s and really anything you can fit in their bags you need to check them out!

Lastly another Sunglass company called Native had an awesome selection of polarized shades; Kevin Karch V.P. of sales showed me the lineup of glasses. Here’s a list of the features that make Native Eyewear a must see company…..N3 Polarized Lenses, Co-injected molding, venting systems, mastoid temple grip, cushioned nose pads plus temple boots, cam-action hinges and more. Check em out at… .

….. Can't wait to go 'Surfing" next year :) ….Until next time “Stay on Em” ….

Hi my name is Danny Barker I'm a NorCal tranplant living in North Central FL Ocala to be exact. I cut my teeth fishing the Cailf Delta, Clear Lake and Folsom Lake for 40 years, some of the best bass fishing waters in the country. My personal best 14.63 lb LM was caught and released on Folsom Lake which ranks in the top 5 fish ever caught on the lake. I've been in FL for 5 years now and love it here, the bass fishing here is outstanding as well. My main focus will be targeting big fish with an emphasis on catch and release and resource management. I want to help all the guys and gals out there looking to catch their personal best bass. This area is loaded with huge fish and I'm looking forward to helping each of us in our pursuit of big bass.
