Northern Pike are prominent in a few lakes and rivers in Colorado, where they are either despised or coveted by fishermen. This predatory and toothy fish was introduced to control specific fish populations, and natural reproduction has allowed the Northern Pike to thrive wherever it was planted and then some. Pike have notoriously migrated from stocked lakes into rivers and into other lakes where they often were not intended to be. Several methods have been attempted to eradicate the pike populations, mostly unsuccessful. Most recently, to grow trophy pike and reduce the numbers of smaller pike that feed on other desirable sport fish, officials have begun stocking larger sport fish later in the season so they have a fighting chance in the spring and the rest of their lives.
