LAKE GEORGE, Colo. - The man who drowned at Eleven Mile State Park on Sunday has been identified as Clifford Carrano, 49, of Fairplay, park manager Kevin Tobey said on Monday.
On Sunday afternoon shortly after 2 p.m., Carrona jumped into the water from the shoreline to retrieve his drifting boat, which had been beached near the Lazy Boy campground, said Tobey. Crews from the Hartsel Fire Protection District Dive Team, the Summit County Dive Rescue Team, Park County Sheriff's Office, the Park County Search and Rescue dog team, the Park County Coroner's Office, the South Park Ambulance District, and the Ute Pass Ambulance District, assisted the Colorado State Parks' staff in searching for Carrona. His body was found in the water at about 8:40 p.m.
"Everyone involved in the search wishes to extend their sympathies to Mr. Carrona's family," said Tobey.
Tobey said swimming is prohibited year round at Eleven Mile, in part because water temperatures rarely rise above the mid 60s during the heat of the summer at the 8,600-ft. elevation of the reservoir. Hypothermia and loss of fine motor skills and major motor skills can occur quickly even with seasoned athletes.
