CPW press release
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Colorado Parks and Wildlife will hold a free firewood gathering day at the Dome Rock State Wildlife Area on Saturday, July 7. Dome Rock, located between Cripple Creek and Florissant, has a mixture of Douglas fir, ponderosa pine, and blue spruce that were harvested to improve wildlife habitat.

Firewood gathering is from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is limited to 15 people and participants with a current hunting or fishing license will be given preference. Only trees that have already been cut and placed in slash piles are available for firewood collection. Participants must provide their own saws to cut the trees into manageable lengths. The road that leads to the slash piles requires a high clearance four-wheel drive vehicle and no trailers will be allowed.

People interested in collecting wood on Saturday, July 7 should call Wildlife Technician Bret Mathers at 719-227-5296 to reserve a spot. Participants will need to meet at 8 a.m. at the entrance to Colorado Mountain Estates, about four miles south of Florissant at the intersection of Teller County Road 1 and North Mountain Estates Road.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife was created by the merger of Colorado State Parks and the Colorado Division of Wildlife, two nationally recognized leaders in conservation, outdoor recreation and wildlife management. Colorado Parks and Wildlife manages 42 state parks, all of Colorado's wildlife, more than 300 state wildlife areas and a host of recreational programs.
