Lake: Mack Mesa Lake
What kind of fish is this? From the most west lake of Colorado
Post By: MeatHead      Posted: 4/8/2009 6:23:48 PM     Points: 387
Went to Mack Mesa lake at Grand Junction this morning, fished from my raft 8:00 -12:00, caught 5 fish, 4 were definitely rainbows, but one I'm not for sure, it's so white, not like normal rainbow with dark back. Can anyone tell what is this?
The weather was nice this morning, a lot people shore fished there, it's not weekend yet!

Looks like a generic stocker to me, and the are a few more lakes farther west from there.

my only guess is mountain white fish

A few more lakes farther west from there? This lake is only 13 miles from the Colorado west border, I thought it's the most west.

There is a fairly new one 3 or 4 miles from the border at the end of the new airport and some in between. I had heard that they put brood stockers in Mack mesa about 3-4 weeks ago, up to 8 pounds.

8 pounds! If I knew this I would stay there until I caught some big ones!

I have not heard of anybody catching any of the brooders. Wish I would have known you were in town, I have been on a fishing frenzy. 7 days already this month, the rivers are on fire and the bass in town are starting to get fired up. Pics are from Saturday, Monday and Tuesday.

Its definitely a stocker rainbow. Whitefish have very small mouths that don't extend to the eye.

Definitely a stocked rainbow. It's just a little more rubbery than the usual slimers.

It is definately a rainbow

Buckeye Res. Is also way closer to the state line. I have fished there since the early 70's, there is also a smaller res. the crosses the state line with Utah, and there are a few more way up north and far south.

I think it's the fish from the fishexplorer emblem!

Thanks guys for all the answers. After dinner I'm pretty sure it's a rainbow. Even though I could not tell by my eyes, but the taste was definitely a rainbow.
Oops! I ate the Fishexplorer emblem!

If you are not sure about the fish ID you probably should not keep it. There are 4 ENDANGERED species of fish over here and they do inhabit both rivers and lakes.

It is great seeing all this traffic from WS waters. This is one that we have on our lakes list, but doesn't get updated as often as we'd like. Thanks for the report and keep submitting those conditions reports, especially from our western waters.

Well Dan, he said he caught 5 fish... doesn't mean he kept all of them.

did say he ate them but who realy cares fish on

He didn't say he ate all 5. Fish on!

I gott admit, if I had no idea what a fish was, I'd put it back, btu something tells me he knew it was a bow or a hybred and not some totally rare or endangered fish. Let's give him a rest.
