Lots of dead fish...

Hit P-lo Reservoir last night and was taken aback by the amount of dead shad. There have been dead shad floating for a while but last night they were extra thick. The entire shoreline had a white line, which was comprised of dead shad.

As my wife and I walked the shoreline we stumbled across a bass that had its final meal fight back. Always crazy to find a fish with eyes bigger than its throat. Made me want to buy one of those crazy big swimbaits to throw at the Res because obviously the bass like em big...

Using black Senkos and a fire tiger Blue Fox Vibrax we each managed a fish in the hour we were there before sundown. Nothing worthy of pictures but still nice not to get skunked. Then we got a beautiful sunset to guide us back to the truck.

I remember towards the end of last summer there were a lot of dead shad too but this just seemed like a lot more than i remember. I'm not too worried about the shad, I know they are ultra sensitive to changes. Do you think it effects fishing? Seems like with all these dead fish to eat, the live ones would just fill up on those...

I was out there on Tuesday night as well and I didnt notice near as many dead shad then. I think the cold front that rolled through Wednesday with all that rain is what caused the quantity of shad to die. The air temps were 30 degrees cooler from Tueday to Wednesday so odds are that large fluxuation led to water temps dropping and that "shocked" the shad...

Sounds like I know what I'm talking about but honestly I am just making an "educated" guess :-)

You would be right nightangler, the cold front shocked the shad causing a die off. This is what actually causes the fall bite to get started. The gamefish start feeding like crazy on the dying shad as the water cools. The jigging spoon looks like a dying shad to the gamefish. The more the shad die and the water cools, the better the fish bite until the water gets to cold.
