Fly rod question
Post By: cobragt203      Posted: 8/24/2012 9:52:51 PM     Points: 114
I am learning to fly fish, my question is I have 2 really old rods one shakespere no name from the early 90's fiberglass 8 foot 5/6 wt lined with new wf-6 line and a cortland from the 70's rough fiberglass? wicker? 8 foot 8 wt lined with new dt-8. my question is should i bother learning on these since they are old and fiberglass of should i move up to a new rod? I got the roll cast down for the most part which is all i really need since i fish very woody areas.

One of the problems I face is i cant feel the rod load. both rods are super stiff.
I might want to add that I fish only lakes and reservoirs no rivers or streams

Here is my advice:
If casting those rods doesn't feel natural, upgrade.
If you naturally prefer a softer rod, upgrade.
The most important part is that once you develop your cast, that your able to make casts naturally, if you can't make them naturally, you'll spend more time thinking about casting and less time catching fish.
Do what feels most comfortable!

I am going to give the cortland a shot one more time then I might have to try out some new rods. I live in the springs moosegoose.

It's not the gun, its the gunner, but having a nice gun sure does help. I recommend either a sage vantage, or an orvis clearwater. Both pretty good values.

Stay Sharp

If you want to come over and try a few different weights out shoot me an email. I live in the springs too. I have 5 different rods to try out
