Help for WFR
Post By: Jake25      Posted: 7/24/2012 12:51:47 PM     Points: 55
A buddy and I are thinking of heading up here in a couple weeks to try our hand at the pike from the shore, any help on decent areas, lure and other tips are greatly appreciated as we have never attempted this before and actually I have never fished for pike before.

Thanks

You might (if you haven't already) review a few of the past forum post on WFR and pike, such as this one [log in for link]

You can filter for each quickly.

A few thing, pike are top end preditors and will take anything up to a 1/3 their body length, so big lures (6-9 inches) are in order. Tube jigs are also a good bet.

Find bait (as in trout or suckers) and the pike will be near by.

Piker are ambush preditors so look for places they can lay in wait for passing prey, I like drop-offs and edges.

Pike are cool water fish. So look for areas where they can move up and down quickly, they can be as deep as 20-30 ft this time of year.

Good luck

Great thanks, yeah I looked at some, should be fun. If anyone has been up there in the last couple of weeks let me know what was working, we have a pretty good variety of lures (after a bass pro stock up trip).

Was at WFR some weeks ago, walking the riprap dam along the N side where the road is blocked off. Saw a female Northern about 20+ and saw some pike sign as they ambushed minnows in the shallows. So try the dam first, there were a couple more folks with the same idea there.

Hey guys!
I was just there this past weekend...we were fishing from the shore as well. Only saw one fish rise agressively 50-60 yards from shore, that's about it. Saw a couple crawdads the size of my foot crawling around! We were at the North point of the Southwestern camp area (if looking at the Google Map, directly to the left of the "WIlliams Fork" label).

I plan on heading back up the 10th through the 12th next month (same location as before) so I guess I'm with Jake...any help with specfic baits/lures for the various species would be greatly appreciated. I soaked some baits and threw out some P. Martin's with no luck.

I thank you kindly in advance for all of your time and any info you could provide! Take care & God Bless!

- Cory

Thanks for all the help guy alas no luck. Water was EXTREMELY LOW AND WARM. No one we talked to was catching ANYTHING. On the bright side a bad day of fishing is still better then a good day at work.
