Post By: cobragt203      Posted: 7/1/2012 5:54:16 PM     Points: 114
Alright guys I recently found a nice carp hole, My question is How do you catch these guys I have tried bread and corn and they won't bite. I know they are in there because I can see them from the shore sometimes surfacing. Any tips on what I should try for bait?

Could be grass carp
I would try bread 9 inches below a bobber It kinda looks like cotton wood floating around or some flies

Caught several carp just recently using worms on the bottom. You can also try using bread mashed up with peanut butter, roll it up and use like powerbait. Just remember to anchor your pole down with a stone or something or you might be going for a swim.

I have heard of the bread working for them pretty good at times. I've also
had them hit my lures at times too.

Another thought.....the waters are very warm and they may only have one
thing on their mind right now....AMORE!!..lol

You know I think you might be right Pbs. I can see them in there pretty good size one to, but when I put some corn right by them they didn't even bother. Also tried bread, cheese and carrots and they could care less.

Carp have a bad reputation in the US. Fishing for them is more like fishing for trout with bait than any other game fish. Use light line and tiny circle hooks. Remember carp eat as much plankton and tiny invertebrates siphoned from the bottom as anything. If you can find a mulberry tree pick as many as you can and freeze what you don't use. I have watched carp many times waiting under a mulberry for them to drop in to the water. They explode the water like a wiper busting shad only much more aggressive.

Hey man. If there are grassies in there, try a hotdog chunk. I catch more grassies on dogs (fished weightless) than I do the kitties I am after.

Eorf might have just the ticket with the moss idea. I used to catch opaleye off jetties using moss about 5 feet under a bobber. Never thought about the tactic for carp, but it seems right. Carp are notorious for being one of the most visible fish in the water, day or night (hence all the big splashes that you usually hear on the water). They are such a tease! They are also the only species that I have ever tried to consume, that I couldn't put down (ha, ha). And I will put down a good sucker once in a while. :)

I have also heard about their love of mulberries. I wonder if they would go for other berries as well.. I am thinking Blackberries might do the trick.

There is a dough bait you can make at home that works great for them. I use to fish for carp off the Platte back in the late 80's and it worked great. You can probably find it online and it stays on the hook better than power bait. I use to hooked into a ton of them with it and a great way to spend a summer afternoon. Good luck!

Has anyone ever been to the fish restaurant in Rulo, Nebraska? It si right on the Missouri River and they fry up carp that you pick out of the live tank just like a lobster. It is G-O-O-D! Only place I have ever eaten carp that was good.

Simple and effective solution - fly rod, crawfish pattern, stealthy approach, one or two strips, leader distance (I'll let you figure that out). People make it seem like carp are easy to fool, and I can bet that most people who try to fish for them are doing it incorrectly. There are ways to catch carp consistently, mastering catching carp on the fly is more rewarding than landing a trophy trout on the fly. These fish spook very easily, so do not be frustrated if you do not catch one right away. People on this forum think they are experts on everything and make it seem like these fish are dumb. Remember, they are not bass and are not fooled easily.

Flies all the way! a woolly bugger or bunny strip in small sizes do well.

Thanks for all the help guys, I managed to catch a few on corn. Including one that snapped my line instantly. I also manage to catch a shad and a rudd all on corn. My problem now is they are usually in my "spot" sometimes you can see them sometimes you can't. However, when you can't see them they are not there and I have no idea where they go.
