Lake: Cheesman Reservoir
Cheesman Opening Day
Post By: steve10      Posted: 7/1/2012 3:35:44 PM     Points: 80
Got to Cheesman around 6am -closest parking lot was already full. Fished until 10am or so and caught 3 smallies and lost a nice 2-3 lb rainbow. People were everywhere and most bait dunkers got skunked with a lot of people saying they won't go back, etc.. The action was a bit disappointing given how long the lake has been closed but quality fish are around just hard to get. They really need to stock this place to increase the action. I am waiting to go back until the crowds thin because I wanted to smack the guy fishing next to me because he kept casting in my spot even though there was plenty of water. Overall a good day.

And now for the sad part. I went late afternoon hoping most people hit it early and thinned out, as I get there and start working the shoreline what do I see, a beer can, a soda can, worm container, wrappers, more cans. Really? 1 day and people are already trashing the place. I can not believe how STUPID people are, our society is filled with morons.

Waterlevel is down about 18-20 feet and will continue to drop per Denver Water because of the drought.. Fishing for most was slow, saw most skunked. With where the water level is it will effect the action, if you know the lake well you can catch some fish, but most will get skunked, hopefully the litter idoits and it causes them to never come back..

I agree. I think most people forgot that you have to work hard to get fish out of this lake. There are some nice fish in here but you won't be getting constant action in here fishing powerbait. Everyone made a big deal about the lake being closed for a long time but given the size of this lake and limited access, it's not a whole lot different than if the lake was open all along since only a very small % of the fish in this huge body of water can be harvested.

I was unable to get to Cheese on July 01 due to 24 being closed til late in the day. Made it up there early on the 2nd. Not much fire damage along 24. Hooked one very nice trout but broke it off right at shore. A lot of people showed up after 9 am. Only saw one fish caught, but it was a dandy rainbow
