So I've only taken my boat out once and next time I want to try trolling, how do you get your lures to a certain depth? If you use bait what kind of rig is better for trolling? How fast should you go when trolling

Best way to learn trolling is to fish on someone elses boat a couple times. Or higher a guild or read alot. Whatcha lot of You tube, To many options to cover. Good thing is all of your ansers are out there already on the net.

Need the lake your fishing and the species your targeting to help more?
Do you have GPS?
Down riggers?
Snap weights?
Lead core?
Inline weights?
Line counters?
What kind of trolling rods you using and line on them?
We really need the lake and species to help you more.

You can start with a shad rap#5 or flicker shad 7 at 1.3 to 2.2mph and go from there. For a lake that has trout crappie eyes White bass.

Hve you learned how the use your Sonar yet if not spend some time watching totorials on You tube so you can get the most out of it.

Troling is not always the best way to catch numbers of fish. So look at jigging, Slip bobber fishing, Bottom bouncing, spooning three way rigs Many options now that you have a boat.
Fish move, but a boat will take you there. dont forget shore fishing is still good most of the year and for certian species also.

i just got a boat and have tried some trollling. some lakes are better for it than others. i troll at 11mile vs jig. and jig at granby, twin lakes, blue mesa etc. so far in my new boat jiggings the ticket.

i usually fish cherry creek or jackson lake, and we have been aimin for wipers and walleye from shore. i have a lowrance elite 4 dsi unit but still trying to figure it out, i think we might have mounted it wrong because instead of drilling into the boat we made a metal mounting rod and mounted it where we thought it should go with a c clamp, barely marked any fish when we tried it at jackson, how do you bottom bounce and i have plenty of shad raps and flicker shads, just dont know how to keep them at a depth

Assuming you don't have lead core line outfits --- try trolling at a specific speed (say 1.5 mph) with a lead weight of a certain size (say 1/2 oz). Measure the amount of line you put out as you put it out. Then troll in water where the depth varies until you hit bottom (that will tell you how deep your lure is running).
Experiment with different amounts of line out, different lures, different weights, etc. until you find the depth where the fish are (your fishfinder is invaluable here) and then simply repeat the process every time.
The key is consistency ... doing the same thing so that you know your lures are at the correct depth.

Speed depends on water temperature, species and type of bait. I troll spinners (worm harnesses) at 1-1.2 MPH and with crankbaits I go as slow as 1 MPH and as fast as 4 MPH.

Are you trolling for suspended fish or are you fishing the bottom with bottom bouncers? Lindy rigging is also a form of trolling.
