crankbait and catfish
Post By: basspirate      Posted: 6/25/2012 8:51:58 PM     Points: 284
Went out after work to fish in the heat. Started out fishing along side the "salad" lining parts of the shore. I was casting a floating vampire rapala and bringing it in with a pretty steady pace. I added some twithces and paused it long enough for it to surface, then started again. I paused right up against some "salad" and this bass came out and hammered it. Just under 16 inches.
I moved along the shore to some deeper water and changed bait to a lightning crappie crank. I used a slow retrieve with this and paused just a bit when it got closer to the shore. I wanted it to come up some before I continued my retrieve so it wouldn't get Hung up. When I started again. This cat just nailed it. He put up quite the fight and was peeling line off like it was nothing. I thought about keeping him but it would have been a few days before I would have been able to fry that bad boy up, so it was released. The bass, as always, was released as well. That cigarette pack and some other trash that was there, I picked up for the litterbugs that couldn't put it in the trash that was 20 feet away.

thanks guys...
starting to wonder about the cat. i was fishing from my float tube saturday morning, in the same spot and hooked a cat about the same size with a helsinki shad. i wonder if they are attracted to the 'white' color on the crank and rapala. but then, i thought cats found their food by smell?
either way, it was alot of fun having them rip line off. both times i thought i had a big 'ol bass..haha.

Wow cats really do like crankbaits, I'll have to give it a shot.

Grats!

I have caught a bunch of nice cats running a crank while targeting bass. Fun way to catch 'em for sure. Cats usually put up a good fight. I still let out a chuckle when they do their death roll.

Here's a pretty good one I caught awhile back while cranking down at Pueblo. This one hit a white RC squarebill.

its pretty cool fighting one of those cats while you are chasing bass. been surprised both times its happened. and yes, the fight is great. this guy just peeled line off, can only imagine how the fight was with yours.
Grats to you....
