First Tiger Muskie

Well what a weekend Good and Very Bad. Started Saturday heading to Big Creek lake Lower and caught my first Tiger Muskie. The bad thing was I wasn't fishing for Muskie. Tring to catch browns/Bows. Bought some new rapala's for the trip. We got there about 830am and is was windy as heck, put the boat in the water and took off trolling towards the campground side of the lake as the water was calmer. about 100 yrds from taking off something hit my line hard bent the pole in half. Fought it for about 20 min then all the sudden a massive splast 15ft from the boat. it circled and came along side the boat. My wife and I got a great look at it (of course forgot the camera/phone in the truck), then it started diving under the boat and either cut the line with its teath or rubbed it on the bottom of the boat and lost everything at that point fish/line/lure. As it was along side the boat for that short of time we could tell it was the length of our pole holder compartment 36 + inchs easy. The bad thing was that I wasn't set up for Muskies with Steel leader or even a net big enough to catch it in. I only had my fly fishing net. Heck its head might not have even fit in the net.

So we started trolling again with a new rapala and had another hard hit and put some real strain on my drag, fought it for a bit and wow gone lost the fish but keep the lure.

The very sad thing was when we got home about 6pm we were coming up the stairs and had found our 5yr Sheltie had passed away at the top of the stairs sometime during the day. The other 2 dogs were beside themselves crying. Found out from the vet later Saturday night that she had a massive heart attack. Dakota Lee with be greatly missed at such a young age.

Sorry about your Dog. We have seen some very nice muskies on the south and east side of the lake. If I were you I would get my heavy gear and head back up as soon as you can. Stick with the lures that worked. Good Luck.

Sorry about your dog I dread the day I loose my pup. I lucked out about five years ago at Big Creek, landed a 37" tiger at the weed bed by the camp ground my friend and I were a twelve pack deep at least in a twelve foot canoe, with no net on six pound test no leader, I got the fish in the canoe and was removing the hook when he decided to flip around, long story short i ended up with a treble hook stuck in my forearm, released the fish and paddled back to shore and removed the hook, memories

Thanks everyone for your concern. its been a really tough weekend to deal with. We would never had thought this could have happened to her at only 5 yrs old.

As for fishing we will be back there soon, but this time with a bigger net and steel leader.

Sorry to hear about your family member. 5 years old is way too young.
