Selling my CO boat to someone in NE
Post By: Walleye Assassin      Posted: 6/24/2012 5:00:52 PM     Points: 110
Hey all, please help!

I'm selling my boat to someone in Nebraska. I do not have a title for the boat per Colorado law, only the trailer. You are required to have a title for your boat in Nebraska, but not the trailer.

Can anyone confirm the above to be correct and let me know how I can go about doing this transaction safely for the buyer and I?

That does not sound right. Titles are for things that can drive on roads. Unless your boat can drive on the road then all you need is the title for the trailer

That DOES sound right...in texas you needed a title for the boat, but not the trailer...when i moved here to fort carson, i had to go to the state trooper office for them to verify the VIN on the trailer. You dont need to go to the trooper office just a place that verifies vin numbers. They would have to go to their dmv and create a title for the boat like i had to do for the trailer when i moved here. So I would think they have to do the same thing in NE. Have the VIN on the boat verified or filled out in the paperwork when they submit for one at the DMV there. Same goes for WI with registering boats not the trailers.

Just sell it uder CO laws you only need give him a bill of sale for the boat and a title for the trailer . He can get title there in his state after words.

Or you can go to the trouble of geting tilte for it there and then selling him the boat later. Not something I would do.

Heck in other states you even have to have seperate titles for the boat, the motor and the trailer. TX I think is one?

no in tx the trailer doesnt have a title like it would here in CO. Reason I had to get one when i moved here from TX. You just get registration for the trailer plates

Something was weird about TX maybe it was you needed a title for a Outboard motor also?
Anyway with any sell like this you would be better off calling the DMV in his state. MAking sure he has what he need to get a title for the boat once he gets there.

I'm the opposite. Bought a boat from someone in Nebraska. They gave me title for boat but only bill of sale for trailer. I had to get vin inspection to get title for trailer in Colorado and only register boat.

texas requires a title for boat, motor, and trailer. you can apply for a lost title or apply for a shop made trailer title if you don't have a title. i would sell it here under colorado law and get all the paper work he will need in nebraska and fill it out and have it notorized here in colorado when the sale is made. texas now requires the seller to file paper work for the sale in a specified time now.
