What the (heck) was going on ~2AM?
Post By: cerd      Posted: 6/22/2012 9:02:29 AM     Points: 548
So I put out in the belly boat around 8:30-9pm last night and stayed out til about 3am (Fri half days are nice and I am just sort of nutty). I was cruising my usual stretch throwing out live shiners, cranks, etc along the shore and around the pits between Kingfisher and the Pt. of legal fishing at the swimbeach.

So it was pretty windy until about midnight, then it went calm. All the sudden things went insane, not catching anything but fishing boiling/splashing like crazy. Small fish, Little fish, Big Fish Huge fish.

The craziest was between Catfish flats and the Swim beach. I was backpedalling and turned my head lamp on to look behind me, and all the sudden there were probably 8 huge splashes in about a 15m circle all within about 5 seconds.

Then lots of little ones all around and boiling. I thought I was into the eyes but not a single touch on my cranks or live shiners.

I had to believe it was:

-Carp just being weird
-Bows feeding on emerging insects that had been stirred up once the wind dies down or being territorial to my presence.
-Who knows?

What do yall think?

And btw I lost my second ultralight in the exact same hole in 30FOW when it fell off my belly boat. So if anyone drags up an abu garcia UL with a shakespeare or two, let me know.

oh, that sucks about your rod.
my guess would be a hatch was going on. smallies trout and carp will get turned on by one, and if the small fish are hitting the surface you can bet that the big smallies will start bait balling them on/ near the surface.

Yeah thats what was crazy though. I started throwing shiners hooked up every which way (slip bobber, through the dorsal, cast retrieve through the nose) and not a touch. Was a pretty neat experience.

And yeah I'd guess it was a hatch, the chironomids that turn into those things that look like mosquitos buzz in your ear but dont bite (midges etc) get swept up off the bottom in the wind then emerge and hatch like mad when it calms out, esp over the pits.

And trout especially have no reason to waste energy chasing baitfish when chironomids emerge like a layer of carpet (300k per sq m sometimes) and they can just swim a long and vacuum them up. It's like 50% of their food source in lakes.

Do you know what other kinds of hatches there are in Chatfield? I'm into stillwater flyfishing, just didnt bring my rod (prob would have lost it too).

depends on where your at on chatty, I have seen every hatch near the inlet that I see in waterton- so could be anything...

Hey cerd,

Saw you out there last night. Was fishing in my 7 foot pontoon. I did the same thing in my tube.... Dropped a carbonlite rod out at massey draw. I I was fishing in the area that you were talking about though I left at 1:30 AM. The big splashes I am fairly sure were carp. While we were out and about I snuck up on several and they would go crazy. The smaller splashes I think were SMB. There has been a recent shad hatch and they are chasing the fry. With all the wind yesterday, I am sure it scattered them and once it calmed down it was dinner time. We were seeing small shad all over the water up to the shore and as deep as 12FOW when we would turn on our headlamps.

Hey Dave,

So that was you I said hello to ha. I just remember looking to my left by the swim beach and seeing some random shape in the dark - never heard you coming!

End up catching anything?

I did fairly good last night. I caught around 4 or 5 casting around. Later, when you saw me, I caught a couple more and then called it a night around 1:30 AM. Only one was above 18 inches, the rest dinks. I did land a perch on 4.5 inch jerk bait though. The bite was fairly good in the wind, but slowed down when it calmed.

We will have to tube together sometime. We will have to set something up at the Chatty get together.

I am starting a special chatty project. after the nightstalker get together. dont want to say much, not appropriate probably violates terms of this site but it is specific to those who fish chatty and will benefit the lake. Stay tuned.

i would like to use my 9foot single man pontoon at night. what are the rules/ regs for doing this.

medic23 The rules are if you have a motor you need to go through ans by 10pm. Other wise you can launch at anytime any place you can carry your boat to. As far as other rules you need to have a pfd for your self. does not need to be on but with you. Second rule is you need to have contact info on the boat. name phone and address. Third rule is you need to have some thing to make noise with. Then one more for night boating is you need to have some kind of bright white. the light does not need to be on all the time but ready to be used in case another boat comes to close
