i went out in search of bass this morning and found a couple of little guys on a senko and panther martin. not really the size that i was hoping for but i am always willing to play! a couple more hours and i couldn't buy a bite...and then the opportunist in me kicked in because there was a mess of 4-7" gills and greenies haning out in the shallows. i always keep at least one small fly box in my bag just for situations like these. but all i had was my bass rods, but my leader (6lb pline) was just small enough to fit thru the eye of a nymph that i had in one of my random fly boxes. didn't have to do much, just pitched out the fly-n-bobber about 10' to my side and drug it thru the schools and they would just gobble it up!
talked to a couple of kids who were chasing some bass and then saw the gills and threw on some gulp maggots and were picking them up just a s quick as i was. i moved farther down the lake and played with the next school of gills that were hanging out in the trees. and then on my last spot (a really shallow flat) and ran into something that i really didn't expect...4" yellow perch!! hanging out with all of the bluegills in 1.5 feet of water. maybe he was up there waiting to pick off some bluegill eggs off the beds...either way i will take a 4 species day no matter how it comes about!!
