Size 10 to 14 wooly buggers in olive were hot last weekend, and caddis patterns were also doing well. Good luck! I hope you all have a great time!

Jim....gotta hit Cowdrey Lake. My son #2 was on Cowdrey 3, 4 weeks ago. Caught lots of fish. I took the wifey up there 2 weeks ago. Started off kinda slow. Fishing deeper water, caught only 3 trout in the first hour. Then moved my lil boat into the main channel right directly across from the gravel parking area. Darn near a fish on every cast. No BS there. I had 2 rods out, one bait, one lure. Surprisingly, little action on the bait. But a Thomas Bouyant spoon? Wham, bam, bam! Didn't matter the color or finish, those fish went crazy over it. Sometimes 3 or 4 hits on one cast. And did they fight! Jump, run, swim around the boat. Jump some more. Take a net.

Lots of small fish, 12 - 13". Probably this years stockers. The bigger fish were probably carry-overs from last year. Their meat was a bright orange, which tells me they've been in there a while.

You almost gotta have a boat or tube or pontoon. Gotta get out a ways. Shore fishing kinda tough.

What route are you taking up? The fire..... The Poudre Canyon is closed, as well as a large part of 287. I was considering going up this weekend, but I would have to go to Cheyenne, then west to Laramie. An extra hour at least. Still might do it.

Good luck.

@ eikskinner -
If u go up trail ridge road over the top, then into Walden it is WAY faster
Than going all the way North , then West, then back South to Walden.

go to the east side of south lake, wade it out a little ways towards the willows, and throw some number 2 meps. as far as flies I'd probably still throw chronomids or big midge. No problem on the spin caster with a bubble, just run some good florocarbon below it.if the fish start rising put the fly directly on top of them, they will come up multiple times feeding on the surface and short intervals, so always is good to have a rod ready with a fly on it.good luck and progress report por favor.
