Was trudging off trail through the grass late yesterday and accidentally stepped on a large snake (Bull Snake I would guess). The dude made the most hideous sound I have ever heard outside of a Jurassic Park movie and then firmly locked onto my calf. I think I jumped 3 feet up and 5 feet over while shaking my leg like a crazy man... not sure where the snake ended up.
Even though the bite was superficial it was very red and painful this morning so went to urgent care to take care of and was told by the Doc it was good thing I came in since the wound was already clearly infected. I hope the snake came out better.
My point is please be careful... I have been fishing and hiking here since '88 and clearly became complacent.
Snakes carry some nasty bacteria in their mouths! Good thinking going and getting it checked out. I've seen some goliath bullsnakes at BTP, and yes I have heard their eerie hissing type sounds.

My daughter and I collected over thirty large snakeskins from there a couple of years ago for her science class, but I have yet to see a big snake there. I have seen a couple of big bulls at Pinewood recently. The ones I saw were not at all agressive, but accidently stepping on one changes things, I guess. Were you at the last pond on the left as you go in by any chance? That's where we found all the snakeskins.
Very smart move in going to the clinic many of us would wait until our leg was double size before going. Yes, we all get complacent on the trails some times.
I've seen 5 or 6 bulls this year, two were over 5 feet. A few small garters, and one rattlesnake that was at least 4 foot. I've been wearing pants and boots at one spot where I carp fish, I've seen several rattlers there over the last couple of years. Must be a good year for snakes, nice and warm with enough rain to grow enough food for the mice and rats.

too bad about the snake bite. glad to hear youre getting it taken care of sooner rather than later. here is a pic of a snake i saw at simpson ponds a couple weeks ago. seen a snake in that same spot on two different occasions. after seeing that thing, i am always looking at the ground ahead of me, made me a little paranoid to say the least.
Crazy man glad it wasn't a rattler for your sake. snake will be fine im sure.
Had one about 4 or 5 ft swimming straight for my boat about to come aboard had to point my rod at him to get him to change direction that was a bull too

FIshing a river in OK, my fishing partner and I had to literally beat a cotton mouth with our rods to keep it from climbing in the boat. We were lucky we didn't capsize. Sum beach was about 4 ft. long and was dead set on getting in our boat. I don't mind snakes as long as they are a long ways away!
Check out this bad boy at a local pond i fish on the west side of greeley. Definately the largest i've seen recently. Also seen a rattler on the west side of Carter lake on father's day last year.
